Geocache Description:

Port MacDonnell is the southernmost port in South Australia. Situated on a stunning coastline, it is a historically significant town.

This multi is designed to give cachers a taste of the town, taking you to 7 significant locations for clues and the final bringing the total to 8. While the multi should be straight-forward, how long it takes to complete will be dependent mainly on how many of the information sign boards you want to read and how long you want to spend at each location.

Waypoint A: S38 03.266 E140 42.017

Your tour starts at the foreshore where you will find a signboard commemorating Mary MacKillop.

When did she become Sister Mary of the Cross? 186A

Waypoint B: S38 03.251 E140 42.013

Walk across the road to the old Customs House.

When did the building cease to be used as a police station? 195B

Waypoint C

In the grounds is a round object left over from a previous war. According to the information sign, it has a total weight of 1/C ton.

Waypoint D: S38 03.478 E140 41.707

Drive west to the Breakwater. (This will show on Google maps as in the sea; it is actually reclaimed land.) Find the information signs on local birdlife.

On the sign “What shorebirds can I see in this area?” count the number of species of birds on the sign starting with S. This is D.

Waypoint E: S38 03.416 E140 40.526

Continue west to the lookout for the Petrified Forest and examine the historical displays. The 18E0s saw a boon for construction in Port MacDonnell.

Note that the original waypoint and the memorial to Smithy are no longer accessible, so this question has been changed. The answer is still the same if you have the original details.

Waypoint F: S38 03.548 E140 39.721

Continue west to Cape Northumberland and the site of the first mainland lighthouse in South Australia . Locate the information board on the wreck of the Admella.

On August 13, how many passengers were saved with the use of the lifeboat? Double this number to get F.

Waypoint G: S38 03.342 E140 39.807

Head back towards town and take the turn to the old cemetery. You might choose to look at some of the interesting headstones.

The Cremation Memorial Garden was established in 199G.

Waypoint H: S38 03.052 E140 42.915

Head through the town to the Woolwash Interpretive Centre.

Add Mingbool and Summer Hill Pk together to make H.

You should now be ready to find the cache at S38 0D.CEA E140 4G.BHF. This is a short drive from Port MacDonnell.
