The Forest Witch and the Witless Fellow, Finnian Letterbox Hybrid

This cache has been archived.

Dublin Arts Council: It pains us to let this go, Finnian was well loved by many. Unfortunately, vandals got the upper hand here, and we can no longer keep it going.

Thanks to everyone, who visited and appreciated.

RIP, Finnian.

The Forest Witch and the Witless Fellow, Finnian
by Sharon Dorsey
There once was a young man named Finnian who regularly explored the parks of Dublin to walk along the various paths and to collect frogs, snakes and other small creatures around the many ponds and waterways. Every time he came to a park, in addition to his collecting jar, he would bring a bag filled with candy or salty snacks to munch on.
One day after he was finished snacking and admiring his newest catch, a tiny tadpole that he named Jim, he threw his empty bag formerly containing cheese puffs into the waterway.
“A bit of trash is no big deal!” he said out loud to no one. But unbeknownst to Finnian, someone was listening. And watching. And becoming very angry.
A forest witch, whose task it was to guard the parks of Dublin, watched Finnian trap one of her precious creatures and defile her beautiful waterway with a snack bag. Menacingly, she approached Finnian.
“I watched you as you trapped one of my precious creatures in your jar then defiled my waterways with your salty snack bag! For your lack of respect for this park I am turning you into a tree stump!”
Then the witch clapped her hands three times and Finnian’s skin turned to bark and moss and he became still and rooted to the forest floor.
“Stay here in this forest, Finnian, and tell those who happen to find you that they should take good care of nature, to not take anything from the forest and to not leave anything behind. Do this and I’ll consider turning you back into a young man.”
The witch left a few items inside Finnian’s mouth for others to find. Among the items is a stamp that says, “Keep it green!”
“Don’t forget to tell them to use the stamp, Finnian! Let no one ever forget how important it is to keep the forest beautiful!”

Artist and Credits:

Sharon Dorsey is a Cincinnati native who now calls Columbus home. She feels that Columbus has provided a great environment to develop her own art-making, which has led to a commission to create public sculptures in the community from Columbus Recreation and Parks Department and Dublin Arts Council. Sharon is the Program Director of Open Door Art Studio & Gallery, a non-profit creative space for adults with developmental disabilities. She appreciates the rich creative community and supportive central Ohio arts scene.

Sharon was very excited to be selected to be a part of the ever-expanding Riverboxes program. In her words, “Having a permanent work of art draped by nature is a dream come true. I chose a spot covered in moss because I love the idea of perpetual greenness. I love that one form of nature can feed upon another, which then feeds upon another - symbiosis upon symbiosis. I also love how our imaginations go wild in these environments. We invent stories, and these stories beget a life of their own. Creative minds feeding upon the sounds, smells… the canopy of the natural world.”

Amberleigh Community Park was constructed with the health of the Scioto River in mind. Because the park has a large parking lot and is so close to the Scioto, landscaping and a wetlands area were installed to diminish contaminants from storm water runoff. Storm water eventually drains into the river, but plants in the wetland barrier lessen the amount of contaminants by breaking down dangerous chemicals in the water.

Sharon Dorsey was assisted by Geocaching advisor msmandi.
