Geocache Description:

The idea for this cache started when we heard about a ghost story related to the Dryden Recreation Centre.  The ice rink was used as a temporary morgue to house the bodies of the crash victims.  After some research, we learned of this memorial and hoped to share this piece of history with others.

Flight 1363 was a scheduled Air Ontario passenger flight which crashed near Dryden, Ontario on March 10, 1989 shortly after taking off from the Dryden Airport. The aircraft was a Fokker F28-1000 Fellowship. It crashed only 49 seconds after takeoff because it was not able to attain sufficient altitude to clear the trees beyond the runway.  Buildup of ice and snow on the wings was found to be the culprit. The aircraft struck trees and disintegrated upon impact, causing the death of 21 of the 65 passengers and 3 of the 4 crew members on board, including both pilots.

The cache itself is not located at the actual crash site, nor is it right at the memorial itself.  The terrain is somewhat challenging in that it requires a short trek over bedrock and boulders, but no actual whacking of bushes is involved.  It is partially concealed in its little hide-y hole, and not so cleverly camouflaged. The container is a good sized peanut butter jar and has a nifty official Geocache patch for the FTF.
