`Tale monumento nacque dall’ampliamento della sede della Curia vescovile disposto e curato da Raniero Gatti, il quale fece anche costruire una grande sala per le udienze, oggi nota come “Aula del Conclave” per il fatto di aver ospitato il primo e più lungo conclave della storia.`

`The Palace of the Popes is the most important monument of the city of Viterbo and it has become a symbol. It was built on the occasion of the transfer of the headquarters of the papal Curia in 1257 by Pope Alexander IV.`
