Geocache Description:

A straightforward cache found after a short walk over a well made but rough path. The main purpose is to showcase a beautiful location on the island of South Uist.

This is the first cache in what we hope will become a series of caches to showcase some of the wonderful scenery of the islands that make up the Uist chain. We want to take you to less frequented points on the islands. This cache is to be found on the north side of Loch Eynort. Loch Eynort is a sea loch accessed off the main spine road running north/south through South Uist. A short distance after turning down the side road you will be able to chose either North Loch Eynort or South Loch Eynort - you need the former. Drive to the end of the North Loch Eynort road and there is a parking place - this is a waypoint for this cache.

After parking you need to take the unmarked path through the wooded area next to the parking place. The path is good with granite chips, unsuitable for buggies or wheelchairs, though. This path was upgraded a few years ago to improve public access to this most lovely of areas. Very soon you find yourself out of the trees and into open land with superb views of the surroundings. You can enjoy steep hills on your left and the loch on your right. You may be able to see seals in the loch, lazing on raised rocks or swimming around. In the past we have seen what we believe to be otters and this is also something that guidebooks say too. Look up and you may be lucky to see an eagle swirling overhead. Go at the right time of year and you will see glorious displays of heather.

The cache is hidden at one of the various viewing areas along the path and takes less than ten minutes to walk to when walking at a relatively sedate pace. After you find the cache you can, in fact should, walk further along the path as it remains in good condition for a further ten minutes. At that point there is a style and a small bridge which you can cross and keep walking for quite some distance further on a grassy path.

The cache itself is a standard lock and lock inside a camo bag. It contains a pen and a log book. We have also included a small gift for the first to find and a couple of swapable items. We will regularly add to these to make it exciting and a pleasure to discover. Also in the cache at placement is a trackable in the form of a gecko - please help it with its mission if you are able.

The cache is not hidden in grass to avoid the risk of tick bites. Ticks are endemic in the Uists and can carry Lyme Disease. The cache is accessible without moving any stones.

Please note that we have been advised that there is a particularly heavy infestation during May/June 2019. Either avoid the area during this time or take special precautions such as those advised here
