Helping Our Native Butterflies Thrive
This rather unassuming park in Balmoral has something about it which is a bit special. In a joint venture between the Albert-Eden Local Board and Forest & Bird, they have planted this park with plants selected to attract native butterflies and help them thrive.
There is an interesting information board where you can learn about our native butterfly species including Red Admirals, Long-tailed Blues, Yellow Admirals and Common Coppers.
According to the board, Red Admirals favour stinging nettles - but don't worry, no need to go far off path for this one - a step or so off path to reach this and should definitely be visible from the path.
You are looking for a very small cache in keeping with its surroundings. It might be a bit fragile so please be careful when retrieving the cache, and make a note of how you found it so you can replace it the same way. Extracting the log will be tricky so tweezers are highly recommended. Try to pop it back so it looks its supposed to be there. You will need to bring your own pen. Stealth will be needed as it might be a bit fiddly to get and replace the cache - in daylight hours you'll be visible to neighbours across the street and of course other muggles using the park. Good luck!
Balmoral and Mt Eden Roads are both very busy and no parking is permitted, and the corner entrance is steps only (I think). The Bank St entrance is ramped - ideal for strollers etc and street parking is available most times. Your geohound is permitted at this park. It's mostly fenced but the nearby roads are very busy so keep an eye on the kids and dogs. There is no park lighting here so please consider your safety if coming at nighttime - however the street lighting from Balmoral Road is bright, so you won't be in the dark.
