Svjetojanj is a smaller peninsula on the NW coast of Pag located about 3 km from Stara Novalja. On the northern of the peninsula there are steep stone cliffs, which are covered by the remains of the small medieval fortress for which is assumed that was built during the 6th century.
The fort was used as an important defensive element of a highly sophisticated system for protection of maritime interests of Byzantium during the beginning of its domination on the Adriatic.
Layout of the fortress extends in an east-west direction with a clearly recognizable remains of the entrance on the western façade wall. Such a facility could once be dominant and easily noticeable from the open sea or the waterway through the Velebit channel. The place name, hides a lasting memory of the first touches of Romanesque-Croatian language on the island of Pag and it is assumed that it points to a possible religious object of St. Agnes
One of the theory is that once in this fort, which still bears the name Castle in Svetojanj or Sutojanj, during the Byzantines from 535th to 620th there was a small oratory or church, which was found by the old Croats and her name Sancta Agnes translated into own language: Svetojanj
The bay of Svetojanj is protected since 2013 as Site of Community Importance (Habitats Directive)
