There are a number of unopened road allowances and water access points on Hornby Island that are under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. The land and trail nearby is part of an unopened road allowance called Goldfinch Rd.
While some water accesses and unopened road allowances on Hornby are managed as neighbourhood parks, Goldfinch Rd is not one of them. However it is still considered a Park and Protected Area as it provides public open space and/or contributes to the Island’s trail system.
The Hornby Island Official Community Plan Bylaw 149, 2014 requests that the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure maintain the unopened road allowances in their natural state, prevent unpermitted alienation by adjacent land owners and discourage overnight camping by means of signage.
This all means that Goldfinch Road won’t be developed anytime soon, and that it’s considered an important public space. Enjoy the walk through the trees, and of course the waters of Tribune Bay. Happy caching!
