Geocache Description:

“It's been my experience that you can nearly always enjoy things if you make up your mind firmly that you will.”

L.M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables

Lucy Maud Montgomery was a Canadian Author who created one of the most iconic literary characters in history.  Montgomery's Anne Shirley books were inspired by her home province, of Prince Edward Island where she was born and spent her childhood.  Montgomery left PEI in 1911 when she married Presbyterian Pastor, Ewan Macdonald and moved to Leaksdale, Ontario where her husband held the position of minister at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church.

After living 15 years in Leaksdale, the Macdonald’s were called to serve two parishes in Norval and Glen Williams.  Lucy Maud Montgomery lead a busy life in Norval, raising her two boys, Chester and Stuart, teaching Sunday School and involved in various organizations such as the Norval Choral Society and  Norval’s Women’s Institute.  She was also actively writing during her time here, publishing seven books - “The Blue Castle,” “Emily’s Quest,” “Magic for Marigold,” “A Tangled Web,” “Pat of Silverbush,” “Courageous Women,” and “Mistress Pat.”

Eventually, the MacDonalds would leave Norval and retire in Toronto where they would spend the remainder of their life.

The cache is not at the posted coordinates. This multi-cache consists of 3 virtual caches and an actual cache at the final stage.  PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU WILL NEED TO DRIVE BETWEEN SOME OF THE STAGES.

STAGE 1

“I love to smell flowers in the dark ... You get hold of their soul then.”

― L.M. Montgomery - Anne's House of Dreams

The coordinates will take you to a plaque.  Determine the number of years Lucy Maud Montgomery lived in Norval.  Divide that number by 1000 and add it to the following meaningless coordinates:

N 43.38.780  W 79 51.706

STAGE 2

“Oh, of course there's a risk in marrying anybody, but, when it's all said and done, there's many a worse thing than a husband.”

― L.M. Montgomery - Anne of Avonlea

Here, you find yourself at a place where Montgomery and her husband spent much of their time in Norval.  Find the number on the building. Divide that number by 1000 and add it to the following meaningless coordinates

N 43 39.701 W 79 53.253

Stage 3

“Why must people kneel down to pray? If I really wanted to pray I’ll tell you what I'd do. I'd go out into a great big field all alone or in the deep, deep woods and I'd look up into the sky—up—up—up—into that lovely blue sky that looks as if there was no end to its blueness. And then I'd just feel a prayer.”

― L.M. Montgomery - Anne of Green Gables

Here you are at another place where the Macdonalds spent a lot of time during their years here. Find the number on the building.  Divide that number by 1000 and add it to the following meaningless coordinates:

N 43.38.044  W 79 53.241

Final

“After all," Anne had said to Marilla once, "I believe the nicest and sweetest days are not those on which anything very splendid or wonderful or exciting happens but just those that bring simple little pleasures, following one another softly, like pearls slipping off a string.”

― L.M. Montgomery - Anne of Avonlea

Lucy Maud Montgomery believed that the Halton Hills area was one of the most beautiful in Ontario.  She enjoyed listening to the running waters of the Credit River and the beauty that surrounded it.  While much of the area has changed since her time here, you can still find a few places that have stayed the same.  You will find what you are looking for after a 400 m hike down the trail
