I'm placing this cache in honor of my dad, Chester, near the batting cage area at Bethel University. My dad is an avid sports fan, especially of baseball, but has been cursed with loving the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Phillies were formed in 1883 and are a member of the National League East Division. They used to play in Veterans Stadium but now call Citizens Bank Park their home. They haven't been all bad: in 1980 and again in 2008 they won the World Series, but some of the in-between years have been less than ideal. Several players are in the Hall of Fame. Some of these include Ed Delahanty, Sam Thompson, Grover Alexander, Chuck Klein, Robin Roberts, Richie Ashburn, Jim Bunning, Eppa Rixey, Steve Carlton, and my favorite Mike Schmidt. I remember Schmidt's jog around the bases when he hit his 500th home run like it was yesterday. Another important fixture of the franchise is the late Harry Kalas, their long-time game announcer who is also in the hall-of-fame.
I cannot talk about the Phillies without mentioning their iconic mascot, the Phillie Phanatic. He is a large, green, bipedal critter that I think resembles an anteater with his protruding tongue. He acually has a biography that lists him as 6'6", weighing 300 pounds, and originating from the Galapagos Islands. He first debuted on April 25th, 1978; the year I was born. I was obsessed with the Phanatic, I had several stuffed animals of him and when I was really little my dad tells the story of the time I chased him around town during a public appearance and he had to duck in a building to get away from me...
I hope you enjoy the cache as much as I enjoy the memories.
