This is the only Calophyllum inophyllum green tunnel in Taiwan. "Haitang" sounds like a fascinating and delicate flower, but Calophyllum inophyllum is actually a tall evergreen tree. These trees were planted in 1909. They have now become a century-old corridor carrying the history of Hualien. Each tree here has its own identity card and is listed as a protected old tree by the literary law.
This group of Calophyllum inophyllum had brown root rot in 1994. Every year, doctors are asked to do the diagnosis and treatment. The decayed parts are excavated and patches are applied to continue life. Walking slowly through the green boulevard, you can touch them to distort the dry bark, and the decaying patches are like crusted wounds. However, this century-old green is still full of life.
