Strike It Rich

The California Gold Rush began on January 24, 1848, when gold was found at Sutter's Mill near Sacramento. News of gold brought over 300,000 people to California from the rest of the U.S. and abroad. Approximately half arrived by sea and half came overland on the California Trail. To meet the demands of the arrivals, ships bearing goods from around the world came to San Francisco as well. As soon as the ships arrived, crews often deserted to go to the goldfields. Wharves and docks became a forest of masts, as hundreds of ships were abandoned.

At first, the gold-seekers, called "49ers" (as a reference to 1849), retrieved the gold from streams and riverbeds using simple techniques, such as panning. The gold was simply "free for the taking" since there was no private property, no licensing fees, and no taxes. A "claim" could be "staked" by a prospector, but that claim was valid only as long as it was being actively worked. Later, technological advances reached a point where significant financing was required to mine the gold. Although over ten billion in today's dollars in gold was recovered, only half the gold-seekers made a modest profit while most late arrivals wound up losing money. Merchants fared far better than miners during the Gold Rush. One who "struck it rich" during the early years was Aschael "Ace" Tupper, a failed prospector turned hugely successful shopkeeper. Just as the rush began he purchased all the prospecting supplies available in San Francisco and re-sold them in the gold fields at a substantial profit. Ace's hardware store quickly grew into a nationwide chain which still exists today.

CACHE: You might strike it rich if you get lucky with your walking stick. An inch or two either way can make all the difference.
