Clementine

"Oh My Darling, Clementine" is an American western folk ballad written in 1884 and usually credited to Percy Montrose. At first the song seems to be a sad ballad sung by a bereaved lover about the loss of his darling, the daughter of a miner in the 1849 California Gold Rush. As the verses continue it becomes obvious that the song is in fact a tongue-in-cheek parody.

The song may have been loosely based on the entangled lives of Ashael Tupper, famed California Gold Rush entrepreneur and Clementine McGillicuddy, daughter of an obscure gold prospector. McGillicuddy had befriended Tupper before the latter had made his fortune in the mining supplies business. Historians now believe that it was at least in part McGillicuddy's idea to purchase picks and shovels in San Francisco and resell them in the gold fields for massive profits. Having failed at prospecting, Tupper was known to be broke and in debt at the time so it is unclear where the initial money to buy the equipment came from.  Clementine McGillicuddy disappeared 1850 and was thought to be drowned just days before Tupper himself vanished while under investigation for her disappearance. Though Tupper denied any romantic involvement with Clementine, mutual acquaintances claimed Clementine professed her feelings for Tupper on multiple occasions. Thus, authorities suspected that a lover's quarrel might have played a role in the apparent tragedy. Neither Tupper nor McGillicuddy were ever seen again. Their joint disappearance remains one of the most intriguing, unsolved mysteries of the 1849 California Gold Rush period.
