Star Wars fans had to wait a very long time for the next instalment, between "Episode 6: Return of the Jedi" and "Epidsode 1: The Phantom Menace", so just imagine what a mixed blessing it was when they got the movie but also got . . . Jar Jar Binks!
I won't go into all of his flaws here (or into the recent theory that Jar Jar is going to turn out to be the secret identity of the evil Lord of the Sith). but I will say that it has puzzled fans for sometime now as to how such an annoying character came to be. Who could be responsible for inflicting this on the Star Wars universe, and the movie-going public?
