Geocache Description:

Welcome to the serene fishing village of Celestun. In Yucateca Maya, Celestun is roughly translated as Stone made of Salt.

From pre-Columbian times, Celestun has been known for its harvesting of salt and fishing. Throughout ancient Maya/Yucatan history, this area was known to produce the most sought after salt in the area. Researchers say that, in ancient Maya times, Yucatan white-salt was worthy of the nobility as far away as central-Mexico. To access this cache site, you will be driving through the village of Celestun and a short distance along the coastline. You will see shallow salt-flats which, at certain times in the year, can appear very pink in the center and white salt crystals along the banks.
