Derailer (PARKING) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Blue Crow Expedition: I brought this geocache in today. This area has changed dramatically since I hid the geocache more than seven years ago. At the start, it was surrounded with dense brush. Then it was completely clear cut. Now the brush is growing back again.

This geocache seemed to give many people trouble. I have done careful waypoint averaging, but many said the coordinates were off. I know there have been multiple containers here at least twice. The containers also tend to fill up with water. Geocachers get looks from people on the bike trail as they go past. I am ready to let the location rest.

Geocache Description:

This is a quick pickup on the Oak Leaf Trail near Capitol Drive.

About the Container

You are looking for a magnetic container. It is hidden completely out of sight. Please bring your own pen.

About the Location

This location is just a few steps off the Oak Leaf Trail. It was hidden in the trees when I first created this cache but the trees have been cut back since then so now the location is more open. There may be people passing by on the trail depending on when you're there.

Parking

There is a free public parking lot nearby on Estabrook Drive. A path at the south end of the lot leads to the Oak Leaf Trail.

About the Derailer

This part of the Oak Leaf Trail was built on the old Chicago and North Western rail line. Look at the apparatus that's built into the tracks. It looks like a switch but it's not. There is no second set of tracks to switch onto. What we have here is a derailer. If you need to guarantee that a train won't go farther than a certain point, the derailer will intentionally put the train off its tracks rather than let it go on.

Permission

Permission to place this cache has been granted by the Milwaukee County Parks Department. Permit No. 495.
