The Smooth Newt
Der Teichmolch bevorzugt halboffene bis offene Landschaften, meidet jedoch dicht bewaldete Bergregionen nicht völlig. In solchen Gegenden findet man allerdings erheblich häufiger den Bergmolch und besonders im Westen den Fadenmolch. In den tieferen Lagen Mitteleuropas ist der Teichmolch der bei weitem häufigste Schwanzlurch und neben der Erdkröte und dem Grasfrosch eine der noch fast allgegenwärtigen Amphibienarten. Bei „Krötenzaun“-Aktionen an Straßen zum Schutz für wandernde Amphibien werden nicht selten hunderte, im Extremfall sogar mehrere tausend Teichmolche registriert.
The smooth newt, also known as the common newt (Lissotriton vulgaris; formerly Triturus vulgaris) is a species of amphibian, the most common newt of the genus Lissotriton. It is found throughout Europe, except the far north, areas of Southern France and the Iberian Peninsula. The smooth newt occurs in western Asia and most of Europe. It is not present in southern France, in southern Italy and the Iberian Peninsula, and is also not found on many Mediterranean islands. It is typically a lowland species, ranging up to about 1,000 metres but reaches 2,150 metres in Austria. It is found in damp meadows, field edges, parks, gardens, woods and stone piles.
