During World War II, Imperial Japanese Navy had the No.6 Fuel Oil Plant in Taiwan. The plant consisted of a main plant in Kaohsiung (高雄廠; 高雄) and two branches in Hsinchu (新竹支廠; 新竹) and in Taichung (新高支廠; 台中清水). Here in the Hsinchu plant, butanol was produced from agricultural crops by fermentation. Now, several ruins of the plant can be seen in the area surrounding JianGong Elementary School (建功國小). Taiwanese government decided to preserve it as one of historical heritages.
