Geocache Description:

Shhh! It’s a secret!

This cache is located near the head offices of four of Australia’s intelligence agency headquarters: The Defence Intelligence Organisation, the Australian Signals Directorate, the Australian Geospatial-Intelligence Organisation and the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation.

Here’s a bit about each one. I have this information from the organisations own public websites.

Defence Intelligence Organisation (DIO):

The Defence Intelligence Organisation (DIO) was established in 1990 as the Australian Government's source of expertise for matters relating to global security, weapons of mass destruction, foreign military capabilities, defence economics and transnational terrorism.

Our mission is to provide the best intelligence possible to the intelligence consumer – whether Defence Minister, government policy-maker or battlefield commander. The intelligence and advice we provide supports the planning and conduct of ADF operations, defence capability and policy development, and wider government planning and decision-making on Defence and national security issues. We also provide specialist advice to support whole-of-government strategies, such as countering proliferation and combating terrorism.

To achieve this mission, we provide timely and independent intelligence assessments on countries and foreign organisations relevant to Australia's security and strategic environment. This includes military capabilities, weapons systems, cyber threats and defence-related technologies.

Australian Signals Directorate (ASD):

The Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) provides foreign signals intelligence, known as Sigint, to the Australian Defence Force and Australian Government to support military and strategic decision-making.

Support to military operations has been and continues to be a primary goal of Sigint. Sigint has improved the safety and effectiveness of our forces in military and peacekeeping operations from the Second World War to the present day.

Sigint now also supports a broad range of government policy development and decision-making. In an increasingly complex world, our work helps the government to make well-informed decisions on political, defence and security issues that affect Australians and Australia’s interests.

Australian Geospatial-Intelligence Organisation (AGO) The Defence Imagery and Geospatial Organisation (DIGO) was established under a Cabinet Directive on 8 November 2000 by amalgamating the Australian Imagery Organisation, the Directorate of Strategic Military Geographic Information and the Defence Topographic Agency. On 2 December 2005, DIGO was renamed the Australian Geospatial-Intelligence Organisation (AGO) in 2013. AGO's Mission is to provide geospatial intelligence from imagery and other sources in support of Australia's defence and national interests.AGO is the lead geospatial and imagery intelligence organisation in the Department of Defence. Its functions are: To obtain geospatial and imagery intelligence about the capabilities, intentions or activities of people or organisations outside Australia To obtain geospatial and imagery intelligence for the purposes of meeting the operational, targeting, training and exercise requirements of the Australian Defence Force. To obtain geospatial and imagery intelligence for the purposes of supporting Commonwealth and State authorities in carrying out national security functions. To communicate in accordance with government requirements the intelligence obtained under the above functions. http://www.defence.gov.au/ago/about.htm

Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO):

ASIO was established in 1949 as Australia's national security intelligence service. ASIO operates under the direction of the Director-General of Security who is responsible to the Attorney-General.ASIO's role is to identify and investigate threats to security, wherever they arise, and to provide advice to protect Australia, its people and its interests. ASIO's functions are set out in the the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation Act 1979 (the ASIO Act).Security is defined in the ASIO Act as espionage, serious threats to Australia's territorial and border integrity, sabotage, politically motivated violence, the promotion of communal violence, attacks on Australia's defence system, and acts of foreign interference. It also includes the carrying out of Australia's responsibilities to any foreign country in relation to threats to security with a particular focus on politically motivated violence.

Have fun with this. As you would imagine, there are frequent Police patrols in the area. The cache is not located near any of the buildings, so you do not need to approach them. There is also a lot of muggle activity here, making stealth required most of the time, and giving this an extra half point of difficulty. As it is near a carpark for members of these organisations and others in the area, it is best to leave it until out of work hours.FtF honours go jointly to Goldenwattle and Decrypter, with a very quick find on a very dingy night. You must be nuts!
