Take a break to enjoy the view at Archey's lookout about half way along the Makahika track.
The Makahika track, part of the Te Araroa trail, is 15km long. Average walking time is 6-7 hours going south, or 6-8 hours going in the steeper northerly direction. Allow about 3 hours one-way to reach the Archey’s lookout. This lookout and Horowhenua lookout are only about 10-15 minutes apart. However there is a steeper uphill gradient to these lookouts from the southern end.
Access is either from Shannon (Mangahao Road) or Gladstone Road in a valley in the hills behind Levin.
Pleased to report that Mangahao Road is in a much better state than it used to be. Still gravel and windy though.
Good tramping footwear is recommended. Warm clothing, a raincoat, first aid, a whistle and torch should be carried, along with food and water. There are many stream crossings, particularly at the southern end of the track. Enjoy the bush and the birdlife.
The container is a black plastic 750ml drink bottle. Please bring your own pen.
