Fung Tak Estate was built by the Hong Kong Government in 1991. Long ago, this public housing estate was my temporary home for a year. Being new to Hong Kong culture and the language, this was an eye-opening experience for me, although I can't say that I miss the super tiny shower. I do miss the friendly people though. I was and generally still am the only foreigner who regularly visits this place (my mother-in-law still lives here). The people here are from the "Grass Roots" strata of Hong Kong, hard-working, good people -- far from the glitz and glamour of touristy areas. But still fascinating nonetheless and well worth exploring.
GPS is not particularly reliable here so please follow the directions.
On the 3rd floor of the Fung Tak Shopping Centre, you will see a large, open tile plaza with a stage at one end. Go to the north end of the stage to the stairwell, the GZ is half-way up to the 4th floor inside the stairwell.
The plaza is one of my favourite places to relax and watch a very different style of Hong Kong life. In the mornings and evenings, there are often groups of locals performing fan dancing, tai chi, etc. Occasionally someone will bring a stereo and old couples will have a dance party.
