What is CARW2017?

CARW= Cache And Release Winter. It is a winter gathering of geocachers from all over Edmonton, the province of Alberta, some geocachers travel from other parts of Canada and the world to attend our local Geocaching weekend long cache finding spree. This year the weather went from +10'C on Friday March 3, to -18'C overnight on Sunday March 5, 2017. CARW began in 2007, making this year the 10th Anniversary year!

What do you do on this CARW weekend?

Before the weekend; On Thursday March 2nd in the evening about 6pm, the volunteer reviewers will publish the CARW2017 geocaches. You create a pocket query from the bookmark list of geocaches that the volunteer event organizers make, or download from our website. http://www.twilc.ca/carw/index.htm

There’s a Camrose and Area CARW publishing event Thursday March 2, (GC6T5HQ).

There's also a CARW2017 Tourist Trap Solving (Whitecourt Edition) event Thursday March 2, (GC70K7Y).

A Camrose and Area puzzle solving lunchtime event, Friday March 3, (GC6VWK3).

There's also a CARW2017 - Boardgame and Release Winter event, Friday March 3, (GC70F9Z).

Attend the CARW kickoff, a chilli cook off supper event Friday March 3, 2017 (GC6XFXR).

Then from 9am Saturday March 4 to 230pm Sunday March 5, 2016 you find as many CARW2017 caches as you can! Everyone is searching for these brand new CARW2017 geocaches. These new geocaches make up the topic of conversation at the events that occur as the weekend progresses. If you havn't done.... you should! XXXX cache was amazing! You have to go find that one!

There's a Saturday evening cache, mash, dash (coffee) event (GC70DAY),

A Sunday Wakey Wakey Eggs and Bacie Breakfast event (GC6XNZJ),

The final event is thee Sunday afternoon wrap up event (this event). Read more to see what the wrap up is all about!

CARW2017 had 188 caches, 8 of these were event caches. There were 7 different cache types including; letter box, multi, event, traditional, and puzzle caches. CARW is an amazing event where you get to act like big kids, find the caches, have fun, meet other cachers and share in the joy of geocaching! Join us at this event on Sunday afternoon as this is where the prizes are handed out for the geocache finders and the cache owners who hid them.

Can anyone find a cache?

Yes, just download the caches and find away!

Can anyone hide a cache?

Yes but quality finds take precedence, see our rules by visiting http://www.twilc.ca/carw/index.htm People who hide geocaches and want their geocache to be included in the wrap up event voting and prizes, need to send their geocache information to CanadaRSMY before 2359 hours on February 20th 2017, she can be reached through the Geocaching message center.

Can anyone host an event?

Yes, please contact the event organizers (click their name at the very top). We are not allowed to “stack” events (geocaching rules), so events being held in conjunction with CARW need to be in consultation with wrap up event organizers.

New Rules this year;

  • Early Bird Deadline! Anyone who has their cache(s) reviewed (with no issues) and goes into the “Q” before February 3, 2017 will have their name entered into an early bird prize draw. Each cache that is ready for the Q will be a separate ballot for the drawing. The early bird draw will be the first person to select a prize. For example; if Sigshark has 5 caches he wants to hide for CARW2017, but only has 3 of them ready and in the Q before the early bird deadline, then his name will be entered 3 times for the early bird draw. The volunteer reviewers will tally the names and number of caches per name, and forward this to the wrap up host. All you have to do is have your cache in the Q before the early bird deadline! Please note that proximity issues do happen. Your cache must be cleared of any proximity or other issues before being put into the Q. You must be present at the wrap up to claim your prize.
  • If you do not submit your hide to the volunteer reviewers by 2359 hrs (1159pm) mountain standard time on Monday February 20th, then your cache will not be considered a CARW cache. You can still submit your cache. You can choose to get the reviewer to publish it, however all late caches submitted after the midnight deadline, will be asked to remove the CARW from the title and from the cache description. We’re taking a zero/no tolerance for late caches policy this year. Why? For CARW2015 there was less than half (about 50) submitted by the deadline. After the deadline had passed over half the CARW caches (about 70 more) were submitted. Did you know that each cache takes time for the reviewer to analyze content, verify coordinates, and put into the “Q” for publishing. Now multiply that by 100 caches for this weekend caching spree, and that’s a lot of volunteer time. As a sign of respect, late caches will go to the end of the list to be reviewed, and will not be considered for CARW. Make like a Scout and Be Prepared! Don’t miss the deadline!
  • A complete list of rules for hiding caches is available from http://www.twilc.ca/carw/index.htm
  • Theme this year is Canada Tourism, Parkland County Tourism. Please note that tourism is not solely limited to businesses. Groundspeak does not endorse any geocache that is promoting a business. Any geocache that is promoting a business will be asked to change, to comply with groundspeak rules.

I know who most you are, and if I don’t I will ask you who you are, all false logs from people who did not attend the physical event will be deleted.
  • Volunteers needed, suggestions and donations taken.
  • And most importantly, THANK-YOU sponsors! Without sponsors we couldn’t make this event as awesome as it is!
