La cache è nascosta all'interno della grotta di Cima Neutra: per trovarla dovrete esplorarla da cima a fondo... anzi al contrario!
The cache is hidden inside the cave of Cima Neutra: to find it you will need to explore it from the bottom to the top!

Quota Neutra

Questo massiccio torrione di roccia, privo di toponimo nella cartografia di guerra, fu definito dagli italiani "Quota Neutra" perchè, dopo che i fanti salisburghesi del 59° reggimento "Rainer" avevano riconquistato il Cimone, si trovava nella "terra di nessuno" ed era isolato tra le linee avanzate di entrambi i contendenti.
Nella primavera del 1917 fu collegato alle posizioni italiane del monte Caviojo tramite un camminamento realizzato sul versante ovest della cresta e trasformato in un poderoso caposaldo dai genieri del X Corpo d'armata che scavarono nel suo interno un'estesa fortificazione in caverna il cui ingresso è situato alla base della sua parete sud-ovest.
Si raggiungeva dalla galleria che attraversa la cresta della retrostante Quota 1078 scendendo i gradini di una ripida diramazione laterale comunicante con un camminamento defilato alla vista del nemico che portava all'ingresso della galleria principale e proseguiva poi fino all'avamposto realizzato dagli italiani su un rilievo sottostante la "Feldwache 5" definíto dal nemico "Buchenkopf" ("cocuzzolo dei faggi").
Oltre l'ingresso, la galleria principale è diritta e pianeggiante per un breve tratto, ma poi diventa una rampa tortuosa e molto ripida, con gradini alti e stretti, che sale ai piani superiori della fortificazione ed arriva quasi sulla sommità del torrione. Ha una decina di diramazioni secondarie, quasi tutte verso sinistra, che portano ai vari locali del vasto complesso sotterraneo composto di ricoveri per il presidio, depositi di viveri e munizioni, una vasca di calcestruzzo per l'acqua potabile ed inoltre sei osservatori, due postazioni per cannoni da montagna da 65 mm, otto per mitragliatrici ed un'altra per un riflettore, distribuite sui vari piani ed orientate verso Cima Vangelista, i monti Seluggio e Tormeno, la linea avanzata avversaria in Val di Rio Freddo ed i versanti ovest e sud del Cimone.

Un altro camminamento coperto costeggiava le pareti sud ed est del torrione (nelle quali erano state scavate cinque cavernette di ricovero non collegate col complesso sotterraneo) e raggiungeva l'avamposto in galleria che attraversa il contrafforte sud-ovest del Cimone allo sbocco del quale era stata ricavata una postazione per mitragliatrice rivolta verso il pendio sottostante alle pareti orientali del monte. In seguito, il collegamento tra il Cavioio e la Quota 1078, a sud della quale erano addossate le baracche per le riserve del presidio, fu reso più sicuro mediante un lungo camminamento sotterraneo con numerose uscite laterali che immettevano in una profonda trincea parallela ad esso scavata nella roccia del versante ovest della cresta.

Come trovare la cache

Alle coordinate del listing vi troverete sul versante ovest di Cima Neutra, all'imboccatura bassa della galleria. Entrate proseguendo dritti per qualche metro e lasciando sulla vostra sinistra alcune diramazioni. Dopo circa 20 m sulla destra si trova una lunga scalinata in salita: lasciare stare anche quella e proseguire lungo il ramo principale facendo un curva a sinistra di circa 90 °.
Da qui inizia la salita: una ripida scalinata attrezzata con un corrimano in corda sul lato sinistro che arriva dopo circa 50 metri ad un prima postazione osservatorio. Continuare il percorso sempre all'interno della galleria, la scala prosegue avvitandosi fino ad arrivare ad un secondo slargo con punto di osservazione verso l’esterno. Si sale ancora, tenendo sempre la direzione che sale verso l'interno del torrione aiutandosi col corrimano in corda per superare gli scalini di roccia che sono alti e piuttosto scivolosi. Alla fine di questa rampa di scale, qualche metro prima che il percorso diventi finalmente pianeggiante e finisca il corrimano in corda c’è la cache.
Consiglio vivamente di proseguire l'esplorazione della rimanente parte del cunicolo fino all'ultima postazione osservatorio e quindi all'uscita che si trova quasi sulla sommità del torrione. Da qui è possibile ricollegarsi al sentiero che scende dal Monte Cimone.

Quota Neutra

This massive stone tower, with no name in the war cartography, was described by the Italian "Quote Neutral" because after that the soldiers of the 59th Salzburg "Rainer" regiment had regained Cimone, he was in "no man's land" and it was isolated between the advanced lines of both sides.
In the spring of 1917 it was connected to the Italian positions of Mount Caviojo via a walkway built on the west side of the ridge and turned into a mighty stronghold by sappers of the X Corps who dug in inside a vast cavern whose entrance is fortification located at the base of its southwest wall.
It was reached by the tunnel that crosses the crest of the rear portion 1078 down the steps of a steep adjoining side branch with a walkway hidden from view of the enemy led to the entrance of the main tunnel and then went to the outpost built by the Italians on a pad below the "Feldwache 5" defined by the enemy "Buchenkopf" ( "crown of beech trees").
Beyond the entrance, the main gallery is straight and level for a short distance, but then becomes a winding and very steep ramp, with tall and narrow steps, which climbs to the upper floors of the fort and comes almost at the top of the tower. It has ten secondary branches, almost all to the left, leading to different rooms of the vast underground complex consists of shelters for the garrison, stores of food and ammunition, a concrete tank for drinking water and also six observers, two stations for 65 mm mountain guns, eight machine guns and another for a reflector, distributed in different areas and oriented towards Cima Evangelist, the mountains and Seluggio Tormeno, advanced attacking line in Val di Rio Freddo and slopes west and south Cimone.

Another covered walkway ran along the south and east walls of the tower (in which had been dug five admission little caves not connected with the underground complex) and reached the outpost in the tunnel that crosses the southwest spur of Cimone at the mouth of which had been provide a driver for pointing gun toward the slope below the eastern walls of the mountain. Subsequently, the link between the Cavioio and Quota 1078, south of whom were huddled barracks for the reserves of the garrison, was made more secure through an underground walk with several side exits that went in a deep trench parallel to it in the west side of the rock ridge.

How to find the cache

At the listing coordinates you will be on the western slope of Cima Neutra, in front of the low mouth of the tunnel. Enter and go straight for a few meters, leaving on your left some branches. After about 20 m on the right is a long uphill steps: leave even that and continue along the main branch making a left turn of about 90 °.
From here begins the climb: a steep staircase equipped with a handrail rope on the left side that comes after about 50 meters to a first observatory station. Continue the path always in the tunnel, the scale continues screwing itself until you get to a second open space with observation point outward. Go up again, always keeping the direction that goes towards the interior of the tower with the aid of rope handrail to overcome the steps of rock that are high and quite slippery. At the end of this flight of stairs, a few meters before the route finally becomes flat and ends the handrail rope there is the cache.
I suggest you to continue the exploration of the remaining part of the tunnel to the last station and then to the observatory which is located almost on the top of the tower. From here you can reconnect to the trail that descends from Mount Cimone.
