Geocache Description:

The entrance to the Stewardship Forest, 34-acres donated by Gertrude Cairns, is hidden along a dead end just off Hwy 65 and this cache will lead you through the main trail of the woods . Keep in mind, at one point the trail seems like a backyard but stay on track and the forest will open up to you!

During spring and autumn the trails are quite muddy. I suggest wearing boots.

Cairns Woodlot Stewardship Forest is a special place here in Ellsworth, Wisconsin. Donated by Gertrude Cairns in tribute to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Cairns, it is one of twelve Stewardship Forests in the state. The purpose of these forests is to protect and promote responsible management of the world’s forests. Cairns Woodlot is also an educational demonstration forest which makes it an outdoor classroom for the University of Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Conservation Department, and the Lake States Forest Experiment Station of the U.S. Forest Service.

Placed by the librarians at Ellsworth Public Library to promote our geocache program.

Permission given by the Village of Ellsworth on August 28, 2016.
