Geocache Description:

Stanborough Park, also referred to as Stanborough Lakes is a 126-acre park in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, England.

A riverside park had been considered for Welwyn Garden City since the Master Plan of 1949, however other priorities for the town always took precedence.

The park features two lakes, which were opened in the 1970's. They were man-made and built as a result of gravel extraction at the time of the building of the A1(M) motorway.

At the very northern end of the park is the remains of the original soil heap that was extracted from the two lakes. It had been intended to use this extracted soil as part of the motorway building - but due to time constraints and other factors this never happened. In the end the soil was used to create the hills and mounds along the eastern side of the park and other landscaping. What remains of that soil heap now stands alone.

From the top of this heap (see way-point given) you get a great view of the surrounding countryside to the west, you just need to ignore the constant motorway noise. I recommend you go to the summit of this mound to enjoy the view before searching for the cache.

This is a very popular site following snow in winter, as a place for local families to go tobogganing as children can go in all directions and even into the dip in the centre, so it covers all different age ranges and skills.

The cache you are looking for was a small klipit container but, due to the fact this location often collects rainwater, the cache has been changed to a simple 35mm container cache hidden relatively high in the forks of a tree so not reachable by small children without help.

Hopefully this new cache will not end up completely waterlogged like the original cache.

Happy hunting!
