Geocache Description:

Another Roadside Attraction Geotrail

South Carolina - Old Sheldon Church

There is nothing better than a good road trip: driving down the open road, eating at tiny roadside diners, going 150 miles out of the way to take a selfie in front of … the Peachoid water tower! Oh Say, can you see … me with the world’s largest frying pan?

This geotrail honors those unique, odd, bizarre, fun, historic, campy, weird, and just downright interesting roadside attractions in North and South Carolina. The caches aren’t meant to be hard, it is a power-trail after all. None of the caches are hidden at the posted locations - but answer the question correctly and you will have a working set of coordinates. All of the hides are preform bottles.

The Old Sheldon Church, formerly known as the Prince William Parish Church had a tumultuous and eventful history. Its first service was in 1757 and is thought to be the first church built in the United States to be built in the Temple style. Built in in the 1740's and 50's by William Bull, the church was named Sheldon in honor of the Bull family ancestral home in England.  The church was burned in 1779 by British troops during the Revolutionary War. It was rebuilt from the remaining walls between 1825 and 1826. Sherman burned the church a second time on Jan 14, 1865 at the end of the Civil War.  The tombstones in the adjacent cemetery hold the names of the early South Carolina leaders.  Today all that remains are 6 pillars and the edifice walls set in a picturesque Spanish Moss draped clearing.
