Geocache Description:

This geocache was placed by B.A.M.S and ajenne at the Harburn Wells in Haliburton, Ontario. There are several Wells on the rock face that range from 2-10+ feet in depth.

These wells, also called potholes, are an incredibly interesting geological feature that is created from massive water flows. The specific one that created these formations is likely from subglacial meltwater from the last glaciation ~12,000 years ago. As the water melts it moves rocks and other debris along with it. If this water flow begins to move in a circular pattern, creating what is called a vortex or eddy, then the debris being carried begin to carve a circular hole into the rock. This can create very large, very deep holes in many kinds of rock, even hard rock such as the gneiss where these potholes are found.

For more information on this process see these links: 1, 2, 3

Instructions

Take the Harburn road out of Haliburton and turn right on the Old Peterson Rd (dirt lane).  Parking is available at the posted coordinates.

Continue walking Old Peterson Rd to the fork.  Take the right fork.  The trail head is located at the posted waypoint coordinates.  If you look carefully the trail is marked with faint blue lines on the trees.

The coordinates themselves will take you to the Harburn Wells.  They are very interesting to examine, and inside each is a stick to help show the depth. To find the Geocache count the total number of wells and input that number into the "X" of the following coordinates:

N 45 0X.4X3

W 0X8 23.942

Please bring your own pencil

Warning: Please be careful in this area as the Wells can be dangerous if you do not watch your footing, and the rock can be slippery when wet.
