Geocache Description:

Bjerre Kirke fra omkring år 1150.

Bjerre Church from around year 1150.

ENGLISH:

The Church is build in the romantic style of local tufa stone, while the tower in bricks is younger, from the late middelages. In the Catholic time it was inaugurated to Saint Laurentius. The Pulpit is from the early sixten hundereds, while the "sky" is younger and dated to 1652 and made by a local woodcarver from Horsens. The Altarpiece is approximately as old as the pulpit but made at another workshop, probably in Horsens. It is in Renaissance style, by Clemens Rasmussen and Laurids Povlsen. The altarpiece got its ornaments in 1634. The Altarpiece has had different paintings, the present is painted by Anker Lund and is from 1891. The murals are probably from the end of the 1400. To the south we have Saint Peter by the Heavens Gate with a big key. Below the key there is painted a little soul that looks to be saved and just below him there is another soul. Below him there is painted a hell yawn represented by a devils head blowing flames in which we see a lost soul. This is unusual as heavens gates is normally painted to the north and the hell yawn on the south with Christ between them. This is the left part of the mural over the altar. In the nave we see Jesus with his excecutioners placing the crown of thornes on his head. The doors in front of the alter are form the beginning of the 1700.
The figures are Gothic (copies) from the catholic times of Virgin Merry and Johannes the apostle. The originals were found in the ceiling of the church tower in 1926. They probably belonged to an older altarpiece.... The originals are today at the National Museum in Copenhagen. The bell is from 1325-50 and one of the oldest in Denmark. It is no longer in shape to be used by automatic ... so it has to be manual operated.

Please remember to bring a pen!
