This cache is placed near the Waihopai Soccer Club's old clubrooms.
I played soccer here in the mid 1980s and at one time was even the club secretary. I was a member of the club when our senior team won the Donald Gray Memorial Cup in 1986. Waihopai was founded in 1950 and plays its home games at Surrey Park. Waihopai was part of the Southern League from 1975 to 1999 and was also a member of the Soccersouth Premier League in 2000, prior to the 2001 creation of the united Southland Spirit FC team.
I have very fond memories of this area and was sad when I heard the clubrooms had been pulled down.
