Geocache Description:

Time for another non-rectangular slitherlink grid: Altair tiling. Note: the original cache container (since replaced) came from Chelsea the Cache-Laying Chook (thanks gracie7 + Mum!).

In the Altair grid, each enclosed polygon has between four and eight sides. The number of lines that meet at each dot is 3 for the interior dots, and two for the exterior ones.

To work out the location of this cache, you need to do the following:

  1. Solve the puzzle below (see the cache listing for Slitherlink Boot Camp for the rules about how to solve Slitherlink puzzles).
  2. Locate the letters a through to n in the puzzle (i and l are omitted). For each letter, its numeric value is the number of lines around the cell.

The original cache coordinates are S 43 29.ABC E 172 33.DEF, where:

A = a + b
B = c + d
C = e + f
D = g + h
E = j + k
F = m - n

The checksum for A to F is 31.

The current cache location is a short distances from the original coordinates (add 0.038 to the south minutes, and subtract 0.046 from the east minutes).

The cache is a small pill bottle that fits snuggly in a plastic pipe. It is taped to a bent piece of wire that acts as a handle (the end of the handle should be visible and easily reachable). The pipe you are looking for is on the side away from the road. Stealth needed; GZ is a bit exposed.
