Geocache Description:

Some years ago there used to be a geocaches here at this delightful country church, but it was archived and so it was thought appropriate to revive the site and establish a new geocache, albeit not in exactly the same position.

St Mark's Church was originally built in 1860 (that's over 160 years ago !!) on the farm Shafton, Over the subsequent 160 years additions and improvements have been made, but the original structure is as it was all those years ago. It is beautifully maintained by the local community.

The surrounding graveyard is separated into family allotments, many of the names familiar to local residents to this day. Originally built as a Wesleyan place of worship by landowner James Methley (after whom the well know variety of Methley plum is named) St Mark's is now part of the Anglican Diocese of Natal. Services continue to be held here on the first Sunday of each month, and the chapel is still used for weddings - a ceremony seen here since its early construction. Glancing at the tombstones' dates, family members continue to find their resting place in the grounds of St Mark's. They surely rest in peace.

The simple lines of the chapel and the weathered tombstones create a subtle chromatic composition in the settling mountain mists, so much a part of the Midlands summer weather.

Please note that this is a very special place and cachers are requested to respect the sanctity of the surroundings. Please bring your own pen/pencil.
