Geocache Description:

The Battle Royal, also known as the Battle of Blountsville, was a Civil War battle that was fought as part of a series of running battles as part of  Colonel Streight's cavalry raid into Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia.  Confederate Brig. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest began pursueing Union Col. Streight's cavalry raiders as they crossed from Mississippi into northwest Alabama.  Forrest caught up with Streight east of Cullman, AL on April 30, 1863 at the Battle of Day's Gap.  Forrest pursued Streight toward Blountsville and the next day, May 1, 1863, attacked Colonel Streight's rear guard as the Union column was attempting to cross the Locust River's swift waters.  This rear guard action eventually lead to the surrender of Streight's Command as it caused the Federal troops to make tremendous exertions to complete the movement.of crossing the river to escape Forrest's attack.  Col. Streight's exhausted men were finally caught and surrounded by Forrest's Cavalry three miles east of Cedar Bluff, Alabama on May 3, 1963.
