Over the years, the motion picture industry has continued to grow in Oregon. While most films are shot in the Portland Area, many such as The Goonies and Stand by Me have been filmed in other areas of the state.
By far, the most famous movie to have been shot in Salem is One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. This adaptation of the classic Ken Kesey novel comes in at number 20 on the orginal American Film Institue's 100 Years... 100 Movies list of the best motion pictures of the first 100 years of film (It dropped to 33 on the second manifestation of the list in 2007). It swept the major honors at the 1976 Academy Awards, garnering Jack Nicholson his first Best Actor Award.
