Geocache Description:

The [SL] series is a trail of geocaches following the abandoned Maldon - Shelbourne railway. These caches are centred around the hobby of Railway Archeology, which involves tracing the remains of abandoned railway lines. I recommend beginning the series at Maldon. For a full history of the line see the geocache page for GC5MWN5 [SL] - Shelbourne Station or GC6X3P9 [SL] - Laanecoorie Junction.

This is a two stage multi cache placed on the section of publicly accessible land between Shelbourne/Laanecoorie Junction and Peg Leg Gully, the site of [SL] - Twin Bridges. Please note this cache involves accessing some low lying swampland and as such may be unavailable after rain. Please consider the environment when accessing this cache, be careful where you step and if there's water around the cache, leave it for next time.

In this section the railway is on an embankment and passes over several minor waterways. You will notice a concrete culvert under the embankment near waypoint one - this is the only one I have seen on the line. I'm not sure if this was a later addition or if concrete was used rather than timber due to the height of the embankment at this point.

A little exploration at waypoint two revealed some old timber and rusty bolts - the remains of a small timber bridge over the waterway. The bridge has either been burnt in bushfires or removed since the line's closure. The first photo is taken standing on the old railway alignment, looking towards Maldon.

One of the few remains of the timber bridge:

Now, on to the cache - at waypoint one you are looking for a camoflagued bison tube which contains the coordinates to the final container. The cache is a short walk away - there is an entry into the scrub just past the cache which will save you from bush bashing across the waterway.

Please be mindful of local wildlife when looking for this cache, especially snakes during the warmer months. I hope you enjoy the next cache in the series!

Please note that the container at Waypoint One is missing. The final cache coordinates are S 36° 59.139 E 144° 05.521. This note will remain in place until I can provide a replacement container at WP1.
