Bournemouth At War / MAYOR'S CHRISTMAS MESSAGE Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Lost2011: Having surprising lasted over 4 years and racked up 23 favourite points, this Christmas Cache offering has finally succumbed to the yearly council spring clean.

This was my favourite of the Bmth At War series, and one I spent a long time preparing before publishing. It was also the closest geocache I set to where I live.

Many thanks for all the finds and favourite points.

Geocache Description:

Bournemouth At War
1941: MAYOR’S CHRISTMAS MESSAGE

Bournemouth has a great history. I have documented many famous people, major events and occurrences in previous geocaching series highlighting the history of Bournemouth. This series focuses on many of the key incidents and stories in the town when Bournemouth was at war. A complete list of all the caches in this series are bookmarked.

1941 saw some of the worst bombing to the town. In December that year, the distraction of Christmas and seeing in the New Year, which all would have been hoping would be better than the last, gave a welcome relief to the tragedy many were enduring throughout the year.

The third wartime Christmas started with a message from the Mayor, who asked everybody to shop early in the day, during the hours of daylight, because the Government had requested that the utmost economy should be exercised in the use of electricity and fuel. Shops were asked to reduce the amount of lighting used.

Toys had almost disappeared - there were few dolls or cuddly toys and stocking fillers were non-existent. No pretty ribboned boxes of chocolates were to be found and under a Government Order wrapping paper was not available. Even the programmes at the Pavilion and other theatres were cut in size and no more town guide books were to be printed. Crackers, too, were not plentiful and the shops that did have them rationed their sales. Because of the clothes rationing any such gifts purchased still needed coupons and people did not want to give up their precious allocation to others. It is not to be wondered at that gift tokens were very popular!

For the first time, thirty 16-year-old schoolboys volunteered to help the Post Office deliver the Christmas post. With the possibility that Christmas cards might be few and far between for the next year, local people sent extra ones. Shopkeepers found that even though there wasn’t the same variety as usual, the demand was still as great. Turkeys and Christmas trees were also in short supply and bakers were not allowed to sell iced Christmas cakes, only plain ones.

Vintage Christmas Cards
Fitting with the Bournemouth At War theme, there are a selection of Christmas cards from the 1940s & 1950s to enjoy, which show the type of cards people would have received during and just after WW2.

Travel bugs & Geocoins
The size of the container lends itself for trackables to be stored in the box. Please consider leaving any trackables you have here at this cache for others to log and/or move on, should they enjoy this aspect of the game.

Christmas 2016
This cache is Lost2011’s Christmas offering to the geocaching community this year. Like previous years, and what has become tradition, there is a Christmas [post]card to collect. Please do not feel you have to provide anything in return, other than an enjoyable log read.

Please be aware of your surroundings when visiting this cache. The area is a cut-through used mainly by locals when going to and from school or work. With this in mind, and to give this cache the best chance for many finders to enjoy, please consider walking away from the hide before opening the box, and be aware of any other people when searching and replacing. The cache is suitable for all to find. Wheelchair users can get within 5 metres of the cache.

I have enjoyed creating the Bournemouth At War series in 2016 and will continue to add many more to the series in 2017. Many thanks to all who have found them and especially to those who have shared their enjoyment and experience with others in the geocaching community.
