Fancy a proper Christmas tree, but don't want to pay the price of those in the shops? Then why not come along to this perfect opportunity to personally claim your own perfect tree - or two - or three?!? ![laugh laugh](https://www.geocaching.com/static/js/CKEditor/4.4.0/plugins/smiley/images/teeth_smile.png)
Any trees which are cut down/lopped today are yours to take home to decorate the house or garden if you wish over the festive period.
(If you are strong enough to just pull them up, then you can even take them home to plant for future years as well!)
Not only will you be getting a bargain (did I mention they were free?
), but by taking part in this event of removing invasive non-native Sitka-spruce saplings, you will be helping ensure the growth of native Scots-pine trees, a staple habitat & food of our beloved red squirrels.
This section of Hazlehead Park is one of the few areas within the Aberdeen city boundary where red squirrels can be seen and so it is of special interest to ensure that the habitat here is suitable for them, and will make them want to remain.
If we are lucky, we might see some on the way to/from the site.
The CITO event will run from 10.00 - 3.00pm with all gloves, saws & loppers being provided by the ranger team (who might also be on site with some tea/coffee/biscuits if we are lucky) so don't worry about getting sore hands pulling up the saplings. :)
Do remember to wear suitable outdoor clothing though - warm/waterproof gear & indeed clothes you don't mind getting mucky!
Parking is available nearby, as well as a regular local bus service with a stop a little way down the road. (see additional waypoints).
I will wait by the parking area from 09.10 - 09.40 to help lead the main team of volunteers through the woods to the work-site. For any cachers arriving after this time, please follow the route information given in the parking/waypoint notes if you do not know the area.
