Weimar railway station , sometimes called main station, was built in 1846 as the terminus of the railway line coming from Halle (Saale). In 1847 this line was continued first to Erfurt and later to Bebra. In 1876 a second line followed, which led via Jena to Gera. In 1887 a third line was opened via Bad Berka to Kranichfeld and Blankenhain. In the same year the 1000 mm narrow-gauge railway Weimar-Rastenberg/Großrudestedt of the Weimar-Rastenberger Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft followed as the fourth line connecting the station. This was dismantled in 1946, only a section of the connecting railway to Buchenwald remained in operation. A remnant from this time is the west tunnel which connected the track of the private railway with the main station and is still called the Restenberg tunnel today.
Between 1914 and 1922, the present representative reception building was built in neo-classical style.
During the National Socialist era, prisoners were transported to Buchenwald concentration camp and other concentration camps via the railway station and the connecting line that started here.
Weimar railway station was the fifth most important station in the Deutsche Reichsbahn network in the 1989 summer timetable, with 116 regular arrivals and departures of long-distance trains. Weimar lost its status as a long-distance system stop when the newly built Erfurt-Leipzig/Halle railway line (VDE 8) was commissioned in December 2015. The daily ICE train service at Weimar station decreased from 15 to 0 trains, the Intercity service from 15 to 8 daily trains. All Intercity Express trains between Leipzig/Halle and Erfurt now run on the new railway line.
