[구문소]
지질시대인 약 1억년 전부터 황지천과 철암천이 이곳 구문소 암벽사면의 단층선을 따라 활발한 침식을 진행시켜 오다가, 지하에 생성되어 있던 단층동굴과 관통되어 그 속으로 황지천이 흘러들면서 동굴을 점점 확장시켜 구문소가 생겨났다.
Hwangjicheon and Cheolamcheon started the erosion along the fault line of Gumunso rock slope about 100 million years ago, which was geologic age. Then, through Hwangjicheon flowing through the fault cave which was created in the basement, Gumunso.
[건열]
건열이란 물속이나 물가에 쌓인 진흙층이 햇빛에 오래 노출되면 물이 마르면서 부피가 수축되어 표면이 갈라지는 구조이다. 이렇게 갈라지는 현상은 진흙층과 같이 끈기가 있고 입자의 크기가 작을수록 잘 일어난다. 계속되는 퇴적작용으로 건열구도 위에 다른 퇴적물이 쌓여 굳어진 뒤, 오랜 세월이 지나 그 위의 퇴적물이 모두 깎여나가면 건열구조가 암석 표면에 나타나게 된다.
[연흔]
연흔 또는 물결자국이라고 불리는 퇴적구조는 흐르는 물이나 파도에 의해 퇴적물이 싸이면서 지층의 표면에 만들어지는 물결모양의 구조이다. 학자들은 연흔구조를 통해 퇴적암이 쌓일 당시의 환경이나 물이 흘렀던 방향 등을 연구한다. 이 지역에 나타나는 연흔들은 주로 파도에 의해 만들어진 것들이다.
[단층의 구조와 종류]
단층면을 기준으로 위에 있는 지각을 상반(hanging wall, 上盤), 아래에 있는 지각을 하반(下盤, foot wall)이라 한다.
상반이 하반보다 아래로 내려가면 정단층(normal fault, 正斷層), 상반이 하반보다 위로 올라가면 역단층(reverse fault, 逆斷層)이다. 한편 단층면을 따라 상하반이 수평으로 움직였을 경우 주향이동단층으로 분류한다.
[삼엽충]
잘 알려진 화석 동물로 멸종한 해양 절지동물이며 삼엽충강(Trilobita)을 이룬다. 삼엽충은 가장 먼저 나타난 절지동물 중 하나이다. 삼엽충이 화석 기록에서 최초로 나타난 것은 캄브리아기 초기 앗다바니아절이 시작하는 부분이며 하부 고생대에 해당하는 기간 동안 번성하다가 천천히 쇠퇴하여 데본기에 프로에티다목을 제외하고는 모든 삼엽충 목이 멸종했다. 삼엽충은 지금으로부터 2억 5000만 년 전 페름기-트라이아스기 멸종 때 결국 멸종했다.
[Mud cracks]
Mud cracks are irregures in crudely polygonal patterns, formed by shrinkage of clay, silt, or mud, as the surface dried. This area was a lake during the Cretaceous and mud cracks commonly formed on marginal lake deposits due to droughts.
[Ripple mark]
Ripple marks are undulatory surface sculptures that are made by moving water on the surface of sediments. Geologists can get clues for interpretation of sedimentary environments or directions of water flow from the shape and size of the ripples. The ripples here are made by wave actions in the shallow lake.
[Structure and type of single layer]
The upper part of the crust is referred to as the hanging wall (upper plate) and the lower part of the crust is called the lower plate (foot wall). If the upper half is lower than the lower half, it is a normal fault. If the upper half is higher than the lower half, it is a reverse fault. On the other hand, when the upper and lower halves move horizontally along the fault plane, they are divided into a strike-slip fault.
[Trilobite]
Trilobites are a fossil group of extinct marine arthropods that form the class Trilobita. Trilobites form one of the earliest known groups of arthropods. The first appearance of trilobites in the fossil record defines the base of the Atdabanian stage of the Early Cambrian period (521 million years ago), and they flourished throughout the lower Paleozoic era before beginning a drawn-out decline to extinction when, during the Devonian, all trilobite orders except the Proetids died out. Trilobites finally disappeared in the mass extinction at the end of the Permian about 250 million years ago. The trilobites were among the most successful of all early animals, roaming the oceans for over 270 million years.
