Geocache Description:

球磨川の河口に近い徳渕の津にある「河童渡来の碑」です。

碑に記されている文章によれば、1600年ほど昔の仁徳天皇の時代、古代中国の呉の国から九千匹のカッパ（九千坊）の大群が八代に上陸し、そのカッパたちのいたずらが人々を困らせたので、加藤清正が、九州中の猿に命令して、これを攻めさせたとのことです。

現在でも、市指定有形文化財である悟真寺にはカッパ伝説が残っており、毎年6月第1日曜日に「カッパ祭り」が開催されています。
