Solstice # 2 Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Cache Effect: Archiving due to the proximity of the active railroad track.
It has been brought to Geocaching Headquarter's attention that there is no chain link fence between this caches and the active track as I was originally told. [:(]

Geocache Description:

Solstice

solstice is an astronomical event that occurs twice each year (around June 21 and December 21) as the Sun reaches its most northerly or southerly excursion relative to the celestial equator on the celestial sphere. The seasons of the year are directly connected to both the solstices and the equinoxes.

The term solstice can also be used in a broader sense, as the day when this occurs. The day of the solstice has either the most sunlight of the year (summer solstice) or the least sunlight of the year (winter solstice) for any place other than the equator. Alternative terms, with no ambiguity as to which hemisphere is the context, are June solstice and December solstice, referring to the months of year in which they take place.

At latitudes outside the tropics, the summer solstice marks the day when the sun appears highest in the sky. Within the tropics, the sun appears directly overhead (called the subsolar point) from days to months before the solstice and again after the solstice, which means the subsolar point occurs twice each year.

The word solstice is derived from the Latin sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still), because at the solstices, the Sun stands still in declination; that is, the seasonal movement of the Sun's path (as seen from Earth) comes to a stop before reversing direction.

I can see why people geocache in the Winter and why some don't. I find it is good for my health to keep active during the cooler months and this hobby has been an integral part of our family's staying active. Geotrails, fresh air, the tendency to have trails and natural areas more to yourself, no bugs, thicker clothing (for when I encounter prickles), these, and other reasons are why I geocache during the winter. I decided to hide some caches out here because there is this enormous green space that doesn't have any caches hidden in it. Granted it is not the best terrain, it is still cache-worthy. Even though the snow packed down much of it, there is no shortage of high grass and prickles in this area. There are some distinct paths throughout this area, but be prepared to do some bushwacking - nothing an experienced geocacher can't handle. You are looking for an old washed out regular-sized peanut butter jar. I parked in this business area just west of this green space and walked over. Please respect all traffic and parking regulations in the area. Happy hunting.
