Geocache Description:

A traditional cache placed at a location which gives a fantastic view of McArt's Fort, also known as Napoleon's Nose.

View To McArt's Fort / Napoleon's Nose From GZ

THE VIEWS:- If you get the right day for it, not only will you enjoy some stunning views over towards McArt's Fort / Napoleon's Nose but also down over Belfast, Scrabo Tower in the distance and beyond that still, the Isle of Man and Scotland - it's easy to see why it's a popular location.

Views From GZ

THE ROUTE:- There are numerous routes to GZ but the easiest route and  indeed the one that I used when placing the cache is to park at the car park on the Upper Hightown Road at N 54° 38.673 W 005° 58.231 (waypoint added) and from there, depending on your level of fitness, it's a 25-40 minute walk up to GZ along a well maintained path.

THE HISTORY:- Cave Hill is a basaltic hill overlooking the city of Belfast. It forms part of the southeastern border of the Antrim Plateau. It is distinguished by its famous 'Napoleon's Nose', a basaltic outcrop which resembles the profile of the famous emperor Napoleon.

McArt's fort, on the summit of the hill, is an example of an old ráth or ring fort. It is protected on one side by a precipice and on the others by a single ditch, 10 feet (3.0 m) in depth and 25 feet (7.6 m) in width; a vallum of large dimensions. The enclosed area is nearly level. The flat top of the fort is 150 feet (46 m) from north to south, and 180 feet (55 m) from east to west.

It is believed that the fort's inhabitants used the caves to store white foods for the winter and may have served as a refuge during times of attack.

THE CACHE:- The cache is a black watertight snaplock box (L 12.5cm / W 7.5cm / H 3.5cm) containing a logbook held within a further watertight micro sized container, a few pencils and some child/family friendly swaps.  Please be sure after recording your find to replace the container exactly as you found it to help keep it safe from muggles.

THE TERRAIN:- Please be careful and sensible while looking for and retrieving this cache. While the cache is situated in a safe location, there are sheer drops nearby so please watch your footing and pay attention to what you are doing.  I've given a detailed hint and uploaded a spoiler photo (if required) to aid you in your search but if for example the weather conditions are such that you're not happy attempting it or you're not confident in your own ability, then please leave it for another day, it's only a cache after all.
