My father was born in September 1948, right here in Shiloh. He spent his childhood camping and riding his bike around the Shiloh National Military Park. He joined the Army in 1967 and was a member of the famed 101st Airborne Division! CURRAHEE! Dad was a member of a LRRP (Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol) unit in Vietnam where he served 2 tours of duty. He was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor and 2 Purple Hearts, along with many other awards. Dad didn't care about the medals, though. He cared about the only thing that mattered! The man in the foxhole beside him. That's just who he was. Dad spent the next 4 decades doing construction and engineering work, building schools and hospitals. He even spent a year, 2011, in India building a technology campus for the Indian government. Dad had other passions too. Scouting and helping others, mostly. Dad jumped at the chance to be a leader in my scout troop, staying long after I had aged out to mold and grow young men into the leaders of tomorrow. Dad retired in 2012 from the construction trade and applied for the open Veteran's Service Officer position here in Hardin Co. He was instrumental in bringing to life the Savannah Veteran's Park just a few miles from here. Helping his fellow veterans became his only mission in life. You can't swing a dead cat anywhere in Hardin Co. without hitting a Veteran who has a story about how my dad helped them in tremendous ways. But he'd never tell you that. He didn't want the recognition. He wanted to help his veterans. Planted to your left, about 40 feet, is a "Golden Globe" Ginko Biloba tree that was planted in his honor. Purchased for him by his surviving Vietnam Veteran buddies. There's also a Fire Hall named in his honor about a mile from here at the Shiloh crossroads. Oh, and he helped build this replica of the church back in 2001. Anyway, I'm a little biased, I guess. But, my dad was a selfless man who would break his back to help you. If you were a fellow veteran, you were family. Dad passed away in September of 2018 after a short, hard fought battle with Cancer. I miss him every day. I Love you, Dad! This cache is for you!
