Geocache Description:

The cache is hidden along Queen Maeve's Trail leading to the summit cairn of Knocknarea which stands at 327m above sea level.

It is believed the cairn contains the buriel tomb of the legendary Queen Maeve of Connacht although it has never been excavated.

This new trail was opened in April 2015. It starts opposite the Rugby Club in the seaside resort of Strandhill. The initial climb is quite steep but the ascent is made easy by the newly laid board walk. If you decide to climb the entire way to the summit plateau you will have stepped on 530 steps. The track to the summit cairn is fairly level from the top of the board walk.

However you will not have to climb 520 steps to reach the cache. After a short steep climb you will arrive at the Kissing Gate where the cache is located. Please make sure it is hidden as found as this is a well used trail.

NB There is no need to cross any fences or enter adjoining fields to find the cache.
