La tortuga terrestre argentina se distribuye desde el Gran Chaco hasta el norte de la Patagonia. La distribución de la especie está fuertemente limitada principalmente por la temperatura promedio anual, el rango térmico, y la temperatura máxima del mes más cálido, asimismo como por las precipitaciones de verano.
The argentinian tortoise can be found fron the Gran Chaco to the north side of Patagonia. Its geographical distribution is strongly limited mainly by the average annual temperature, thermical range, and max temperature during the warmest month, and by the summer rains too.
El nombre "chilensis" hace alusión a Chile, país que no cuenta con ninguna especie de tortuga terrestre. El error se debe a que el colector del ejemplar tipo escribió en la tarjeta de procedencia: "Mendoza", Chile, lo cual indujo a la equivocación de John Gray al describirla en 1870. En ese mismo año, Philip Lutley Sclater al advertir el error geográfico, resolvió modificar el nombre científico proponiendo su reemplazo por la designación "argentina", en vez de "chilensis". Durante años varios autores continuaron empleando el nuevo nombre, pese a la opinión de Gray en 1872. Posteriormente, por acuerdos nomenclaturales, se empleó en adelante "chilensis" como nombre exclusivamente válido por la regla de prioridad.
The name, "chilensis", shows relation to Chile, a country without any endemical tortoises species. This error appeared when the person who collected the specimen wrote in the origin card: "Mendoza, Chile", which then made John Gray continue the mistake when describing it on 1870. The same year, Philip Lutley Sclater noticed this geographic error, resolving to update its scientific name to change the designation to "argentina" instead of "chilensis". Through the years many authors kept using this new name, despite Gray's 1872 opinion. Some years later, to keep up with the nomenclature, "chilensis" was restored as the exclusive name for this tortoise, because of the priority rule.
