Geocache Description:

The Tunnel Bend diversion tunnel is located near Sheepyard Flat, on the Howqua River. The tunnel is approximately 100 metres long. It was built in 1884, during the Victorian gold rush. Do you DARE TO TAKE THE CHALLENGE OF the tunnel?? Of course at most times there is only a little water in the bottom of the tunnel, but during periods of flooding it could be unsafe to enter, Please use common sense, and stay safe.

The Howqua Hills Historic Area is located 30 minutes from Mansfield via Merrijig by taking the Howqua Track, a gravel road 3kms past Merrijig on the Mount Buller Road. It is accessible by 2WD. The camping area along the Howqua River is set in a beautiful, secluded valley, once busy with gold miners but now popular for picnics, horse riding, bushwalking and four-wheel driving. Camping along the Howqua River is one of the best ways to enjoy this historic area and offers a great base for fishing and other activities. The geocache at this location is a watertight container which in turn holds a waterproof log book. Please pay attention and return the cache so that it does not get found by muggles visiting the tunnel. It should contain a pencil and is large enough for small swaps. There is nearby car parking for a few cars just off the road.
