CLADACH

Cladach is a general Scottish Gaelic word for "beach" or "shore" and occurs in many Scottish placenames.

There is a Hydroelectric scheme based at Cladach. Water is taken from a reservoir at around 800 ft on the slopes of Goat Fell and electricity is generated at the turbines behind the Sawmill. The original electricity generation was for the Castle which was one of the first places in Scotland to receive electricity along with the Castle on the Isle of Rum. Modern generators have replaced the originals which are now operated by SSE.

Cladach is the site of the Cladach Sawmill. There were a series of houses that were let to employees of the sawmill by the sawmill owners. However, in recent years Cladach has essentially been depopulated and the buildings that used to house residents either demolished or converted into small businesses.

A courthouse, which was demolished in 2004, used to post important messages about hearings and agriculture on an Ash tree outside its doors. Locals still put posters up advertising events, which echo this long held tradition.

The old Inn is now a restaurant called the Wineport, which is a bit of a misnomer as the real Wineport is 500 yards north a small harbour which was where supplies for the village were landed. The rugged bay of Wine port obtained its name after a French ship ran aground and its cargo of wine and silk was salvaged and taken up to Brodick Castle.

The milestones are a feature of Arran, marking the 55 5/8 mile coast road, as well as the String, Ross, Machrie and Kildonnan roads. Nowadays easily travelled in a few hours, the traditional and still probably the best way to circumnavigate the island is by bicycle (or tricycle or tandem) and the milestones act as an encouragement and incentive. By cycle one can appreciate the geology and how the geology affects the nature, and the gradient, of the road. Look out for the red sandstone milestones, reputedly from the Old Red Sandstone quarries at Corrie. Originally there were 79 milestones erected, over the years some have disappeared or been damaged, fortunately there has been a campaign to replace or repair these. There are now 80 mile stones as number 23 has a twin. The exact origin of the stones is rather unclear. It is probable they were placed around the time the coastal road was completed, which was 1851. No doubt they were part of the modernisation of the island as more people were coming to visit and would need to know where they were and how far to wherever they were going. The road around the island is circular and so the numbering could, in theory, start anywhere. Logically, it starts near Brodick, but instead of at the ferry pier where most visitors will start, the starting point is at the Old Quay a mile or so around the bay below Brodick Castle. The original community of Brodick was at Cladach below the castle by its red sandstone quay. In 1844 the 11th Duke of Hamilton married. The happy couple desired more privacy so they had the old village demolished and the tenants re-house at Douglas place and Alma Terrace. A new school was built in 1854. No public enquiries or planning laws in those days!
