Geocache Description:

The term Meekatharra derives from the Yamatji word meaning 'place of little water' and lies beyond the headwaters of both the Murchison and Gascoyne rivers.

In most years, surface water is almost non-existent. It is no suprise that early European settlers found water - or lack of to be their major issue. As early as 1902, water was said to be "reticulated" from 5 wells around the fledgling town, but this was clearly insufficient for a growing population. A new bore-field was sunk about 4 miles (7km's) to the North-East of town and on September 20th 1912, water was first pumped here to Tank Hill. The 'new' bores proved to be a fine source - water is still pumped to these tanks today to be reticulated down into the town below.

The cache is a sandwich sized container with ample room for trackables and small trade items. A logbook and pen is also enclosed - don't forget to log your find and sign.

The cache is located on the right hand side of the large water tank amongst some large rocks & matter en-route up to the Tank Hill lookout point. Be sure to take a look once you find the cache and get a great view of the town and its barren surroundings.

You are now on the Eastern Loop Meeka Drive Trail with many more key historical points of interest along the way should you have time to stop & explore.

Photographs of your find can be mailed through to cdo@meekashire.wa.gov.au
