Geocache Description:

Built 1857 to carry the Bishop Auckland to Durham City railway line, and now Grade II listed.

Newton Cap viaduct closed as a railway bridge just before I was born and throughout my childhood future use was under discussion, with the constant threat of demolition.

The bridge finally reopened in 1995 with the A689 being carried over the River Wear.

32 metres high at its highest point with spectacular views towards Auckland Castle and Binchester Roman Fort.

Cache is located at the end of the viaduct by the footpath.

Stand and admire the arched plaque to commemorate the bridge re-opening .

If you glance to your left you may see the magnetic container.

Ample parking in Bondgate.
