Lihue’s Secret Scrubland Trails are paved golf cart paths still ridable on a forgotten portion of the Marriott golf course that has been reclaimed by nature. The entire 27-hole Jack Nicklaus-designed Kauai Lagoons Golf Club, was sold in December of 2014. The trails were officially opened to the public a couple years later and new trail markers erected. The trails are flanked by palms, massive banyan trees, kahalahala or screw pines, African Tulips, and more. The area is home to Egrets, Nenes, Mynas, and unfortunately plenty of chickens. Golden Plovers, our winter visitors from Alaska, have beautiful plumage in the spring. I saw nene fledglings with their parents while scouting the cache site.
Park and the PARK waypoint. The best access for bikers is at the ACCESS waypoint because this is one continuous paved area leading to the paved loop trail. There are several other access points; some gravel, others dirt.
The trail is suitable for biking, jogging, and walking. The best biking portion is a 1.6 mile loop of uninterrupted paved trails. Other section of the trails may be gravel, rocked off, or overgrown. Use responsibility because there are hairpin and blind turns, use a bell if biking, and everyone should pay close attention to other users especially if you are using earbuds. Walkers and joggers should expect to cover a minimum of 2 miles from the parking area depending on your course. I suggest enjoying the entire loop and not rushing this one.
