Celebrate 15 Years of Ye Ole Survey Monuments! Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

GCZ Team: Time to archive our 'Celebrate 15 Years of Ye Ole Survey Monuments' event which was an amazingly attended event not only celebrating 15 years, but also saying 'goodbye' to the way in which this grand old Travelling Virtual has been logged since its inception.

We hope it will carry on (even if in a different way) after the new rules about multiple logging come into force on May 8, and that we may be able to carry on finding YOSM's. We await any new method with anticipation!

All the TB's have been safely logged and our event group photo even appeared on the YOSM GC45CC site, and here it is captured for posterity!

Geocache Description:

We would like to invite everyone who has (or hasn't yet) collected YOSM caches to an event on the gallops at the top of Warren Hill in Newmarket to celebrate the 15 years since the first YOSM was placed on 25 March 2002! We'll be in front of the trig pillar!

Ye Ole Survey Monuments or YOSM (GC45CC) is a very long-lived special 'travelling' geocache which is owned by cacher outforthehunt. YOSM has co-ordinates which change as its CO moves it around the country. The locations, however, are always OS trig points such as trig pillars, surface blocks, rivets or bolts. And most of the locations it has 'been to' remain findable and loggable as virtual YOSM caches. It is a virtual cache, so there is no physical container to find - you just record the YOSM number, the co-ordinates you find at one of the 700+ YOSM locations up and down the country and make a note of them in your log.  You also suggest a D/T rating for the location, and post photos if you like. All the details of what to do can be found on the GC45CC page, and http://www.yosm.org.uk.

The event is next to a YOSM location - YSM387.

25 March 2002 was the date the first Ye Ole Survey Monument was placed at Failand Surface Block on the outskirts of Bristol, so on Saturday 25 March 2017 it will be 15 years old! There will be various events in the UK to celebrate this anniversary, but as we are sadly not available on that date, we have organised this retrospective celebration event on Saturday 1 April 2017 instead, just a week later.

We haven't been 'collecting' YOSM's for very long, but we really enjoy them, and we even have two caches in the Trigtastic Series associated with trig pillars (Trigtastic #41 - Long Rake in the Peak District and Trigtastic #55 - Warren Hill in Newmarket), and the latter is also YSM387!

When:
3.00pm to 4.00pm on Saturday 1 April 2017

What to do:
We hope the weather is good and we aim to to set up a small table. Come and stay for the whole time or just come over for a quick visit and meet cachers from nearby and further afield, and swap stories and chat. Bring TB's for swapping or discovering (we'll have our usual couple of boxes handy) - and don't forget to 'drop them' on the event page using a 'Write Note' before you arrive.

If you haven't found Trigtastic #55 yet, you can even grab three icons in one location - traditional, virtual and event! And there are lots of other caches in the Newmarket area too.

Parking:
Lay-by Parking near the road. Strictly speaking, access is only after 1pm as this is when the general public can access many of the gallops around Newmarket. It is still important to be aware of any horses that might still be on the gallops at any time.

If anyone who has attended a YOSM Event would like to add a souvenir to their profile, here is the link:
